Esteron
& other rivers of the Alpes maritimes
| In the backcountry of Vence, Cannes or Nice, are found rivers like l'Esteron, la Vésubie,
la Tinée, le Boréon, le Loup or le Var. All these rivers offer a nice choice of sporting opportunities and wonderful goals of excursions. Although names like Nice or Cannes do not particularly sound like virgin nature, you will be surprised to see how wild and tough these landscapes look just a few miles off tourist areas. La Vésubie for instance runs inside the natural park called Mercantour where sheep sheppards are facing problems with wild wolves ! |

Upper Verdon
and Vallée de l'Ubaye
| We have already mentionned the river Verdon but this is at a much higher level, (actually in the Alpes). Here is the point where it becomes difficult to know whether you are still in Provence or already in the Alpes. Definitely provençale is the little town of Castellane, but as the road climbs following the Verdon, the Alpine character soon is taking over. Road ends at the pass Col d'Allos and la Foux d'Allos is a little ski resort in the winter. The cooperative dairy of Allos produces a cheese named Tomme, giving almost a taste of Savoy, and in any case, very far from the taste of the goat milk cheese with herbs produced near Castellane. |
