Le Pays d'Auge

The "Pays d'Auge" region is in the back country of the famous ports and resorts of Honfleur, Deauville and Trouville. It takes like two small hours to drive from Paris. Three famous chalk-streams are flowing in the Pays d'Auge: The Risle, the Charentonne and the Touques. The Risle, is a wide river made famous by the writings of Charles Ritz. The Charentonne is a tributary of the Risle, and also described as a "jewel valley" in his Fly fisher's life. The Touques is a charming stream meandering around manors, green meadows and orchards. This is the production region of the star cheese Camembert, Pont-Lévèque & Livarot, here also is distilled the best calvados apple brandy.

Honfleur & Deauville

Parisians love Deauville, Trouville and Honfleur for different reasons. Deauville is an elegant resort offering beaches, golf courses, horse races, casinos and palace hotels. Trouville is more the place to find good restaurants serving seafood in front of the fishers market. Honfleur is an old small harbor visited for the many antique shops and art galleries found in the narrow streets, and for the pleasure of a drink at a café of the old port.

On the picture the walls of the old houses may look dark. They are nicely and fully covered of slate to protect the wood constructions against salty sea winds and rains of the winter storms. Most of the buildings are very old. The clear one on the right is the former salt cellar (grenier à sel), now a town museum.

The Risle

The most famous chalk stream of Normandy

Charles C. Ritz beloved mill of Aclou on the river Risle

La Risle was made famous by Charles Ritz's masterpiece book "A Fly fisher's life". The "Aclou reach" is often mentioned as his favorite fishing spot.

Our stretches are situated upstream from the market town of Pont Audemer. Shopping for river picnic in Pont-Audemer is an outstanding pleasure. Our suggested hotels are excellent departing points for sight seeing to the seashore of Deauville, Trouville, and Honfleur.

The Risle is joined from Paris after two hours leisurely driving. The total distance is 140kms.

Pont-Audemer does not claim to be the Venice, of Normandy

but is clearly built on water

On the Risle is found only brown trout. Dry Fly fishing really starts by mid May. Wet fly fishing can be productive during the early season, between late April and the first serious hatches. Fly anglers of the old time would never wade to fish. Now wading is not necessary, but not forbidden either.

Fishing on the Touques

The river Touques is hosting brown trout, rainbows, grayling & sea run trout. The quality of the surrounding landscapes and "old stones" represent Normandy at its best. From Paris the distance is 160 km. The nearest big city is Caen or Lisieux. From the Touques valley, it is easy to visit the seashore of Deauville, Trouville and Cabourg and also to spend a day at the June 6th, 1944 invasion beaches. The upper stretches of the Touques are rather narrow and can be fished from the banks. The lower stretches require waders. The season, runs from March 15 to September 20th. The Touques offers a combination of difficult wild brown trout fishing and sometimes easierto catch rainbow trouts. Grayling is found on some stretches. Sea trout is a different fishing dry fly anglers occasionally catch one on a big dry caddis. La Touques can be waded but is often fished also from the banks requiring to cast with precision across the trees. The Touques is the best French river for sea-trout, good runs are starting with the high tides of June.

The Charentonne

A nearby tributary of the Risle

La Charentonne is a neighbor valley to the Risle. The surrounding the season, and the distance from Paris is roughly the same. It flows between two nice little Norman towns perfect for picnic shopping.

La Charentonne is a pleasant river to fish, described as a jewel valley in Charles Ritz Fly Fisher's life. It is much narrower than the Risle and can be fished everywhere from the banks. It is even possible to fish with wellies. The river is partly stocked with excellent brown trouts. Wet fly and nymphing are acceptable techniques before the first hatches.

Fishing on semi public stretch with day ticket system. No booking required but. During the year, some periods are closed for re stocking.
