Read below...  Brief information on license & season "Au Rendez vous des Pêcheurs" means "Fishermen's rendez vous" * Fly fishing in France... How is the fishing in France ? Gourmetfly.com is offering you a unique way to discover France from its outstanding country... side. Fishing in France is quite good and France has produced enough fly fishing world champions to prove that you can fish and have fun while learning a lot on our rivers. BUT ! fishing here is rarely easy. France does not compare with any of the usual commercial fishing destinations. I am not joking, this is a serious warning. No one must expect miracles here, it is a different pleasure ! Brief informations on Seasons & Fishing License License - In 1999, the picture became compulsory on most fishing licenses, do not forget to take one. Fishing licenses are often sold at places like the café "Au Rendez vous des Pêcheurs" on picture above, in very small villages, where getting an instant picture is difficult ! The cost of a full season's local fishing license is around 60 euros. If you move to another region, some areas will accept this license, some others will require a complementary ticket between 15 and 30 euros. After June 1st, many places sell a holiday license valid for a period of two weeks. The price is around 30 euros. In 2007, day licenses have been introduced, but they are not sold everywhere, and sometimes not before June 1st. The price is between 10 and 15 euros per day. Private stretches: In the regions of Normandy and Jura we often fish on private properties requiring a day permit in addition to the license. In the rest of France fishing is open almost everywhere  if you are bearing the proper license. Season - The trout season legally starts by March 20th. Some areas offer good early season fishing, but dry fly really starts to be attractive everywhere by late April or May. The peak season will last until mid or late July. August is excellent  in the high mountains or for beautiful evening rises in Normandy. September is considered as a re-birth for the hot places. The normal closing is on the 3rd Sunday of September. Some regions like Normandy, grant an extension until the 1st Sunday of October. After this date you still have dry fly opportunities on grayling (Thymallus thymallus) in rivers classified "2nd category" or coarse fish rivers. The most attractive of these places is the Dordogne, but there are others in the Massif Central mountains. We also have very attractive autumn  fishing of salmon (grilse), in Brittany, and sea run trout in Normandy. For the Alps or the Pyrenees, the peak of runoff should be in May. Some April days are good but the best period is starting in June. In the period mid-September, early October, you can still fish in the Spanish Pyrenees of Aragon and Catalonia, and also in the Alps.
